Junior Challenge Cup R1
Brize Norton Reserves 0 - 1 Wootton Sports
Portsmouth to beat United at Old Trafford? Not a chance. Barnsley to claim the scalp of Premiership Chelsea? You’re having a giraffe. W&D Division 2 strugglers Wootton Sports to shoot down Division 1 high flyers Brize Norton Reserves in the Junior Cup? Jog on son.
As is the case sometimes in football, the underdog can triumph in matches where they have little or no chance. That is the beauty of football, and as it turned out Portsmouth, Barnsley and yes you guessed it Wootton all came away with 1-0 victories in matches they were given no chance of winning.
The wining goal came courtesy of a free kick awarded right on the edge of the Brize area, smack bang in the middle. The ball was thumped home by the Wootton captain Dave Gubbins, who, it has to be said, ran the game from the centre of the park in a man of the match performance.
Other chances were few and far between in the first half. Brize’s best chances came first from some neat inter-play between Karl Shepherd and Jon Smales with the latter firing over from a tight angle. The other great chance was a 1 on 1 with Wootton goalkeeper Leigh ‘Bagpuss’ Grant, who came out on top against the Brize forward. Wootton had several near misses from Russel Bracey and Tom Gonzales, and also came close when the Brize keeper completely missed a clearance. Fortunately big girls blouse Dave Pratley turned his back as he charged down the clearance, allowing the keeper to react quickest, turn, and stop the ball rolling over the line.
Although the game threatened to boil over on a couple of occasions in the second half referee Dale Moss kept the players in check, and did his job well in this writers humble opinion.
At one point in the second half in particular both the Brize and Wootton benches were preparing to dish out the handbags to both teams, as tempers began to fray and Brize frustrations grew. Luckily this was not the case, and thank goodness it wasn’t as Karl Shepherds handbag, containing mascara, eyeliner and lippy would have been no match for Dave Gubbins brick laden handbag.
Woottons backs to the wall display restricted Brize to very few clear cut chances, and Wootton seriously threatened to double their advantage on the break on 2-3 occasions. Brize’s best chance came when a cross field ball found the Brize No.11 and his mate up against right back Paul ‘Smurf’ Simmonds and goalkeeper Grant. Somehow, when it looked easier to score, the Wootton players cleared their lines magnificently.
It may not have been pretty, and would best be described as something of a smash and grab, but it was job done for Wootton Sports and thanks to the hard working mentality of all 11 players they progress to the next round at the expense of Brize Res.

Wootton Sports
