Spartan Rangers 2 - 3 West Witney
After an amazingly disapointing start to the season (culminating in a 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Ducklinton last week), West Witney travelled to the Leys to face Spartan with the hope of kick-starting the season. With 7 members of the 1st team squad missing, we only had 12 men, with a couple reserve players to help fill the gaps.
Almost immediately from kick-off Spartan won the ball and worked it out to the left wing, where Dave Large crossed and Kevin Southwood headed home from a few yards out. There must only have been 20 seconds on the clock!!! This obviously inspired Spartan and made West's heads go down, and for the next 10 minutes it was very much backs against the wall for West. However, player/manager Jon Smith deceided to change our system and match Spartans 3-5-2 formation.
This began to pay dividends for us and for the remaining 30 or so minutes of the 1st half we created several good opportunities which we should have scored from. The best was an outstanding through ball from Jon Smith for last seasons goal machine Matt Townsend to race clear of the Spartan back line, only to see his shot well saved by the Spartan keeper.
The second half began much as the first had ended, with excellent football being played by West, and about 10 minutes in to the second half, that pressure told. Some wonderful passing between wing back Steven Henderson, midfielders Jon Smith & Jamie Goodwin led to Goodwin freeing Smith into the left hand channel where he crossed, only for the ball to be half cleared to Matt Townsend who smashed home from 12 yards.
Within 5 minutes from the re-start West took the lead when Jon Smith found James Clark in the Spartan box and he was crudely up-ended by Steve Williams, leaving the Ref no other choice but to point to the spot. Townsend calmly slotted home his second of the game. Again within a five minute spell the third goal was scored when Townsend squared the ball to James Clark who calmly side stepped the challenge and cheekily dinked home with his left foot.
This 25 minute spell completely deflated Spartan and pretty well killed off the game. But with several injuries seeming to occur to some West Witney players, (notable skipper Mike Greenall having to leave the pitch) Kev Southwood hit a seemingly inocuous volley towards the Goal, where Del Hewson tried to intercept it with his head, only to see the ball deflect into the far corner leaving keeper Matt Hemsley no chance at all.
The game fizzled out after that with Spartan not really creating anything to enable them a share of the points.
All in all, it must have been an excellent game for the observer with some great football being played by both sides. A special mention for Chris Beechey who again put in an outstanding display and was easily the best player on the pitch.
West finally have their first win of the season. Hopefully we can now build on this and carry the good work forward.

Division One
FC Mills 1 - 1 Milton
Mills and Milton played out an entertaining draw with a last gasp penalty saving a point for Mills.
Both teams started brightly and after a frenetic opening period Mills took control fashioning some excellent chances and only an inspired display from Scouser in the Milton goal kept out a long range curler from Ollie Lyon, Danny Harwood's snap shot and the best a dive at the feet of Chris Coggins after an un-selfish layoff from Harwood left him 1-on-1. Steve Lyon burst through on a typical mazy run from defence but was surprisingly flagged offside before he lashed his shot into the trees..
Milton passed the ball well with Summers and Benfield lively upfront, but couldn't make much headway with German Keeper Seb Erler in commanding form,
but after a spell of Mills pressure at the start of the second half Milton broke and won a corner which was half cleared and Erler under pressure from Summers dropped the ball to the grateful forward for an easy tap-in, to open his account for Milton.
Mills now upped the pace and Scouser again had to make great saves from Ollie Lyon and Wazza Senior, but as the second half wore on and Mills got more stretched searching for the equaliser, Milton missed two golden opportunities to finish the match. Firstly Pip Benfield headed over at the near post with a free header and then Milton found themselves 3 on 1 in the Mills box, but the pass was delayed and the chance went..
Mills brought two extra strikers in Danny Godden and Matt Sykes, and as the clock ticked down, a huge clearance from Erler was missed by the Milton defence, Matt Sykes read the bounce and was through on goal, only to be brought down in the box by a desperate lunge from the defender. After the dust had settled Steve Lyon kept his nerve to roll the penalty into the bottom corner to earn Mills a point.
Neither team will be happy, Milton in conceeding such a late penalty when they thought the points were their's and Mills for missing enough chances to win two games. On this evidence both sides should fare well this season.

Division Four
FC Chequers Reserves 0 - 4 Southrop Reserves
In the maiden contest for two new sides to Witney & District football, FC Chequers Reserves met Southrop Reserves at Madley Park, in what was partially a grudge match and partially a meeting of managerial minds.
The first teams of the respective clubs had met in a final-day promotion decider last season, where Southrop emerged victorious over the plucky new boys to the league. Some of the participants were present in this encounter, but this time Anthony Barlow (Chequers) and Graham Ciudiskis (Southrop) were at the helm, and had opening day bragging rights on their minds as opposed to the promotion dream.
Southrop started nervously, perhaps wary of the backlash that had been in the pipeline from Chequers since May. Olly Smith bustled in attack for the pub team, and Richie Eastaff was industrious and positive through the centre. Whilst no real chances were created, there was a threat from the home side and clear discomfort from the visitors.
The turning point seemed to come when Smith suffered an injury, and seemed to be operating at about 30% capacity. He managed a mean 20 yard strike which grazed the crossbar, but Southrop had begun to turn the tables. They took advantage of Chequers’ unfamiliar backline when a deflected pass found Aidy Kew, who finished swiftly past stranded goalkeeper Scott Perkins.
Before Chequers could mount a response, Southrop went two ahead, when Urim Fejzulahu (say that three times fast, or better yet, write it once…) was left unmarked and finished easily past Perkins on the half volley. Quite unexpectedly, the visitors found a third just prior to half time, when Dan Collins’ strike from 30 yards flew in the top corner. It was 3-0 but Chequers probably hadn’t deserved it – and Southrop expected a backlash in the second half.
But it never really came. Chequers battled for long periods but had, by this time, lost Smith in attack and were hoping for inspiration from midfield. Southrop kept things tight and continued to press. But on a rare foray into the Southrop area, Chequers won a penalty for what was deemed dangerous play by the referee. Chris Collier stepped up, but his shot was saved low down to goalkeeper Alex Connolly’s right. The rebound fell in the direction of two Chequers attackers, but they could not finish and the ball ended in Connolly’s arms.
At the other end, there was still time for Southrop to complete the rout. Substitute Bob Truman had a goal disallowed, but Dan Collins scored again with a neat header ten minutes from time as the game petered out to a finish.
Despite the score-line, the match was a great advert for Division Four, which many had thought would be populated by whipping boys hacking their way through a dismal season. Both sides looked capable of doing well come spring and neither will think that this result is illustrative of their seasons to come.
FC Chequers Reserves: S Perkins, S Macintyre, R Eastaff, M Eaton, P Stayt, A Izzard, K Foreman, A Grey, C Collier, O Smith, A Barlow. Subs: D Kilby, S Grundy

Grampus' Man of the Match: The quality of Southrop’s goals was excellent in the game, as was the attitude of several Chequers players. But the award this week must go to Southrop centre back Tom Simmonds. He was born with the tough decisions already made in his head, and his ability as a sweeper shone through on Saturday.
